What This System Is

The IMOC Assessment System is a data-driven fitness scoring platform built to answer one question: How ready is this person's body right now — and how do they compare to their peers?

Most gyms track weight, attendance, maybe a before-and-after photo. What they can't tell you is where a member actually stands relative to people like them — same age, same gender, real active members at the same level of training. And they can't tell you why someone's performance is limited, whether it's physical, mental, or structural.

IMOC built this system to change that. Every metric was chosen deliberately. Every calculation was designed to be fair, meaningful, and actionable. This document explains the whole system — what we measure, how we score it, why we made every decision we made, and what the output means for coaches and clients.

Part 1 — What We Measure and Why

The Four Performance Metrics

These four metrics form the core of Physical Readiness. Each one measures something that matters in real life — not just in the gym.

Bike — Cardio Output (average watts)

We use a stationary bike test and record average watts over a fixed duration. From this we also estimate VO2 Max using a validated formula.

Why bike watts?

Cardiovascular capacity — specifically VO2 Max — is the single strongest predictor of longevity available. Stronger than blood pressure. Stronger than cholesterol. Stronger than BMI. Every 3.5-point increase in VO2 Max equals roughly a 13% reduction in mortality risk. We chose bike power because it's safe for every fitness level, easy to standardize, and directly reflects cardiovascular output.

Grip Strength (pounds)

We test max grip force using a hand dynamometer.

What Grip Strength reveals about the whole system

Grip strength is a signal from the entire body — not just the hands. What it actually tells us: the quality of neuromuscular output (how well the nervous system is driving muscle recruitment), the health of connective tissue (tendons and ligaments deteriorate quietly before grip does, making it an early warning signal), and the hormonal environment (testosterone and growth hormone both track closely with grip strength — a declining grip often signals hormonal shift before other symptoms appear). At 70 years old, grip strength is one of the strongest predictors of whether a person can live independently. Research shows it is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular mortality than systolic blood pressure. A strong grip means the nervous system, connective tissue, and hormonal output are all working.

Bracing / Sit-to-Stand 3RM (pounds)

We measure maximum load lifted for 3 repetitions using the Bracing / Sit-to-Stand protocol.

What this measures: Spinal Load Capacity

This test measures Spinal Load Capacity — how much load the spine can handle while the body actively protects it. Lifting an unstable load from the floor requires the diaphragm, deep core, and pelvic floor to pressurize together and hold a stable column around the spine before the legs can produce force. That system is what keeps the back safe under every real-world demand — picking something up, carrying groceries, moving furniture. A high score means the body can generate force and protect the spine simultaneously. For a population that arrives with low back pain histories, this is the most clinically relevant strength test available. Members who improve this score consistently show decreased pain and increased confidence over time — not by coincidence, but as a direct mechanical outcome.

Sled Volume (foot-pounds: load × distance)

We push a weighted sled and record both distance and load. Volume = load × distance.

Why sled, and why volume?

The sled measures power endurance under real load — the ability to generate force and sustain it. There is no way to cheat it. Volume captures work output: someone who moves lighter weight further and someone who moves heavy weight shorter distances can be compared fairly. It is one of the safest heavy-load tests available because the load cannot fall back on the member.


The Two Perceptual Metrics

Pain Score (0–10 self-reported): "On a scale of 0 to 10, what is your average pain level right now?"

Confidence Level (0–10 self-reported): "On a scale of 0 to 10, how confident do you feel in your body's ability to handle training right now?"

Why we measure these

Pain and Confidence are not soft data — they are neurological signals that directly govern whether physical capacity can be expressed. Pain neuroscience research (Moseley & Butler) shows that elevated pain independently reduces motor cortex activation and output, separate from any tissue damage. The body enters protective mode. Bandura's self-efficacy research — among the most replicated in behavioral science — shows that high confidence predicts training intensity, consistency, and measurable physical adaptation independent of baseline fitness. People who believe they can improve, do. The data confirms it.


Body Composition

We collect Muscle Mass (lbs), Body Fat (lbs), and Muscle:Fat Ratio (MFR) through InBody or similar scanning.

Why MFR only drives the Structural score — not raw muscle mass or body fat

Our original system averaged muscle mass percentile, body fat percentile, and MFR percentile together. The problem: that approach penalized small-framed members. A petite woman with 47 lbs of muscle and 19 lbs of fat (MFR 2.5) is in elite metabolic condition. But averaging raw muscle mass into her score ranked her below larger women who simply weighed more — something she cannot control.

MFR solves this. A 2.5 ratio means 2.5× more muscle than fat — regardless of whether you weigh 110 lbs or 190 lbs. It is completely size-independent. It measures how the body is built, not how big it is. It is also the metric most predictive of metabolic health outcomes: better insulin sensitivity, lower systemic inflammation, and stronger cardiovascular function all correlate with higher MFR independently of bodyweight.

Part 2 — How the Scoring System Works

Peer Pools

Every score is relative to a peer group — active members in the same age bracket and gender. We divide into 8 groups:

Only active members are included. Paused, canceled, and demo accounts are excluded. Only each member's most recent assessment is used to build the pool — their current fitness, not a score from two years ago.

Percentile Calculation

For every metric, we rank the member's score within their peer group. A percentile of 74 means the member scored better than 74% of their group on that metric.

Why percentiles — not raw scores

"Your Spinal Load Capacity is 95 lbs" means nothing without context. "Your Spinal Load Capacity is in the 88th percentile for active women your age at IMOC" is a completely different message — it grounds performance in real, relevant comparison and makes improvement feel meaningful and fair.

Part 3 — The Three Readiness Pillars

Physical Readiness 60%

What it measures: Real-world physical output capacity.

How it's calculated: The average of four performance percentiles — Bike, Grip, Spinal Load Capacity, and Sled.

Physical Score = (Bike pct + Grip pct + Sandbag pct + Sled pct) ÷ 4

Why 60%? Physical capacity is the primary reason people train. It is the most directly trainable, the most measurable, and the most directly linked to real-world outcomes. No other single pillar captures more of the performance picture.

Perceptual Readiness 20%

What it measures: Nervous system readiness — whether the body is in a state that allows full physical expression.

How it's calculated:

PR Score = ((10 − Pain Score) + Confidence Score) ÷ 20 × 100

Pain is flipped because lower pain is better. The result is a 0–100 number. Each input (Pain and Confidence) contributes 10% to the Readiness Score — together making up the 20%.

Why 20%? The mind-body connection is real and measurable. A member with great physical numbers but high pain or low confidence will consistently underperform their capacity. We weight it at 20% because it is a meaningful modifier — but not the primary driver. It is the system's signal that physical scores may not be telling the full story.

Structural Readiness 20%

What it measures: The metabolic foundation — how the body is built at the tissue level.

How it's calculated: The Muscle:Fat Ratio percentile within the member's peer group. Displayed as a raw percentile — no tier labels, because the percentile itself is immediately understandable.

Why 20%? Body composition is a meaningful long-term indicator of how well training is actually translating to tissue-level change. It changes slowly — but that stability is precisely why it deserves equal weight alongside perceptual readiness. It is the structural foundation underneath all physical performance.


The Full Readiness Score

The result is a 0–100 score using the same tier labels as Physical Readiness (Elite / Advanced / Intermediate / Developing / Foundational).

Overall Fitness Percentile

In addition to the Readiness Score, we compute where a member's Readiness Score ranks within their peer group. This is a percentile of percentiles — it answers: "Among all active members your age and gender, where does your overall readiness place you?" This number appears at the top of the report on the main gauge.

Part 4 — Member Profiles

Every member receives a profile based on their data. Profiles are not labels — they are descriptions of what the data shows and what it means for the coaching relationship.

There are two types: Primary (based on the most recent assessment) and Secondary (based on trends across 2+ assessments). The system evaluates the data and assigns the first matching profile in order.

Sandbag pct ≥ 60 AND Grip pct ≥ 60 AND Bike pct < 50 AND Pain ≤ 6

Strength is the standout asset. High force output, strong grip, high spinal load capacity. The gap is cardiovascular endurance. Coaching opportunity: conditioning and sustained output.

Elite Hammer: Squat pct ≥ 95th

The Riser
Overall Fitness pct < 40 AND Confidence ≥ 7 AND Pain ≤ 5

Physical numbers are foundational — but confidence is high and pain is low. The nervous system is ready. The Riser is not behind; they are positioned for upward movement. This is the highest-upside profile in the system. Coaching opportunity: build momentum and let confidence compound.

Balanced across the board. No glaring gaps, no single dominant standout — solid, dependable performance across every domain. The complete athlete in progress.

Elite Anchor: Overall Fitness pct ≥ 95th

Secondary Profiles

Secondary profiles require at least two assessments. They capture the trend — what the data shows over time, beyond any single snapshot. A member can hold both a Primary and a Secondary profile simultaneously.

Real body recomposition is happening. Muscle going up and fat coming down simultaneously is one of the hardest things to achieve in fitness. The Builder is in the middle of a real transformation.

Defined by consistency. Not by peaks — by showing up and delivering every single time. High power endurance sustained across multiple assessments, combined with consistently low pain and high confidence. This is one of the rarest and most valuable qualities in long-term fitness.

All four physical metrics vary by ≤ 10 percentile points across all assessments

Numbers don't spike and they don't drop — they stay locked in. Not peaking in any one area, but everything is solid and has been for a while. The long-game player. At the population level, this pattern predicts better long-term outcomes than high peaks followed by crashes.

Part 5 — The Elite Designation

An "Elite" badge appears alongside a Primary Profile when a member hits a top-tier threshold on their dominant metric. Elite means the member is in the top 5% of their age and gender group among active IMOC members.

Part 6 — Why This System Is Different

Most fitness assessments are either a number with no context or a vanity metric. Neither tells a member, a coach, or an investor what actually matters: Is this person getting fitter? Are they healthy? And how does that compare to people like them?

It is fair. Every score is relative to peers — same age, same gender, active members only. Small-framed members are not penalized for their frame. The scoring adjusts for biology without excusing performance.

It is comprehensive. Physical capacity, nervous system state, and metabolic foundation are all measured. One number — the Readiness Score — synthesizes all of it.

It is honest. Profiles don't tell members what they want to hear. They tell members what the data shows. A Riser is not told they're strong when they aren't. A Hammer is not told their cardio is fine when it isn't. The report meets people where they are and points them where to go.

It is actionable. Every section of the report connects to a specific coaching prescription — outside-the-gym actions tied directly to that member's numbers. The system doesn't just diagnose. It prescribes.

It gets better over time. As more members are tested, the peer pools grow and become more statistically meaningful. The system is designed to scale — the math works for 50 members and for 5,000.
